When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. The retention phase lasts for a minimum of 24 months. Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you've put in so far!
If your retainer is removable, you must be very careful when handling it, as it is fragile and costly to replace. You have been given a special case for your retainer; please make sure you keep the retainer in the case whenever it is not in your mouth. Also, be sure to keep the retainer away from the family pet!
To clean your retainer, hold it under running water and brush it with your tooth brush immediately upon removing from your mouth in the morning. Do not use hot water or mouthwash on your retainer. Never leave it in a hot car.
If you lose or break your retainer, call our office immediately. We will need to make a new impression of your teeth BEFORE your teeth have a chance to move out of line.
If your retainer is bonded to your teeth, you will need to be careful not to bite into hard or sticky foods in this area. You will also need to use a floss threader to clean under the retainer. A bonded retainer must be monitored by your orthodontist and/or dentist. If the area ever becomes unhealthy, the retainer can be removed and replaced with a removable one.
