Overbites, underbites, and other misalignments are common among tweens, teens, and young adults. In fact, almost nobody has naturally perfect, straight teeth. This is why more than 4 million people wear braces. Of course, for ceramic braces to work correctly, you need to be sure you are wearing them responsibly. Keep the following in mind before you head to your orthodontist.

Don't Grind Your Teeth

Grinding your teeth is often a subconscious act, but it's one that can severely damage your braces. If you find yourself grinding your teeth because you're stressed or concentrating on something, practice actively stopping the action and focusing on something else as a stress-relieving tool. If you tend to grind your teeth in your sleep, your orthodontist can provide you with a mouth guard to wear at night.

Avoid Certain Foods

The biggest hurdle for people who have braces is often changing eating habits. Foods that are too sticky, too hard, or too sugary can often damage your braces. This means avoiding the following as often as possible:
Bagels, licorice, and other chewy foods
Popcorn or other crunchy foods
Gum, caramels, and other sticky items
Candy, especially lollipops
In addition, you must also avoid chewing on ice.

Go to the Orthodontist Regularly

Brushing, flossing, and regular checkups are essential when wearing braces. In addition, you should know how to handle the situation if a bracket breaks. When this occurs, check to see if the wire is still attached. If it is, leave the loose bracket in place or use a cotton swab to gently push it back into place. Orthodontic wax will help to keep the bracket in place until you can get into your orthodontist but be sure to do so as soon as possible!
